The region of Peloponnese includes the prefectures of Corinth, Argolida, Arcadia, Messinia and Laconia, while Tripoli is the capital of the Prefecture of Arcadia. After the new administrative division (law 2503/97), the region of Peloponnese is constituted by 107 Local Authority Administrations of first degree: 14 Municipalities and 2 Communities in the Prefecture of Argolida, 22 Municipalities and 1 Community in the Prefecture of Arcadia, 13 Municipalities and 2 Communities in the Prefecture of Corinth, 22 Municipalities in the Prefecture of Laconia and 29 Municipalities and 2 Communities in the Prefecture of Messinia.
The main characteristic of the morphology of the region is the big mountains that constitute the 50,1% of its total extent, while only 19,9% of this area is flat and 30% is mountainous. However, the Region of Peloponnese allocates some of the most fertile regions such as Argolikos plain and the plain of Corinth.
The population of the region of Peloponnese according to the inventory of 2001 of the Greek National Statistical Organization amounts in 638.942 individuals, representing the 5,18 % of the total population of the country. The population of the Region of Peloponnese is mostly rural and it is characterized by a constant rhythm of growth of population which is accompanied by the respective ageing of the population.
Regarding the economic part of the region, the GDP develops augmentatively and consequently the per capita GDP is increased, presenting higher rates of growth related to the total of the country.
The Region of Peloponnese plays an important role in the economic growth of the country, while it produces the 5,2% of the total Gross Added Value of the country. The main sector of the economic growth is the tertiary sector (with 55,9% of Gross Added Value), then follows the secondary sector (with 30% of Gross Added Value) and the primary sector (with 14% of Gross Added Value).
The region of Peloponnese that is depending on its rich history and on its natural beauty is turning to tourism which shows an important growth. The total of overnight stays of foreigners and natives in the region of Peloponnese reaches up to 2,5 millions and corresponds to a 5% of the country in total.
The morphology of the Region of Peloponnese provides the potentials for the growth of alternative forms of tourism.
